At The Gates have written many songs about death, but none quite as poignant as these: the final works of Tomas Lindberg. Tompa’s last wishes reside here, in an album retitled and produced according to his requests, with vocals recorded in one sweep the day before a debilitating mouth surgery. Β The Ghost Of A Future Dead is laden with the morbidity of a premature swan song, which makes it a complicated album to approach; nonetheless, it is an easy album to listen to, cycling back toward a more familiar iteration of the Gothenburg sound that reinforces why At The Gates and Tompa Lindberg have been such important forces in extreme metal for all these decades.
