Happy Wednesday, y’all. Or, as happy as it can be, at least. Smokey Goretooth here again with another installment of “Do I Suck?,” MetalSucks’ version of “Am I The Asshole?” where we take your horror stories and ultimately decide if you suck for some bullshit you may or may not have done.
Today’s entry comes from reader who is choosing to remain anonymous because, well, you’ll see. Let’s dig in…
I don’t think kids should be allowed at shows. Little kids obviously, but even teenagers because they can never get their shit together and it ruins the whole thing for everyone who actually knows how to act right. This happened a few months ago, but it came up again when I was talking to my friend the other day and they think I’m a piece of shit for it and I completely disagree.
So, I was at a show at this kinda small spot in my town. A bunch of local bands, so I don’t wanna put the situation on blast by bringing them up just in case anyone else remembers it. I don’t even remember who was exactly playing at the time but everything had kind of built up to this situation. There wasn’t any separation between the adults and the non-adults there, everyone was just mixed up in the crowd. When I was younger, I preferred that because it made me feel like I was the shit getting to hang out with older people and be normal part of everything happening, but now that I’m older, keep us the hell apart.
Anyway so I’m standing near the pit but I’m drinking and saving all my energy for the band I really wanna see. There was a was five kids who were all friends that were also in the pit. They probably weren’t any older than like 15 or 16, and they just kept crowd-killing people along the pit. This isn’t my first pit rodeo and I know that if you stand near the pit, you’re gonna get hit, but what they were doing was ridiculous. Like just punching people who weren’t even looking in their direction, just straight up dick moves.
Back in my younger day we had beatdown crews where me and my shithead friends would kinda do the same thing. Not like crowd kill people but just absolutely demolish people who were already actively in the pit. The first few times I saw them throwing punches, I thought maybe they were just terribly uncoordinated or something, but then I realized what was really happening and it pissed me the fuck off.
There was one kid in particular who was the biggest problem and I saw him elbow a girl in the back of the head on purpose and I was like “okay, now’s my chance” basically. I’m old but not old old and when I got in the pit I went square for this kid. Ngl, I didn’t even try to hide it but I did try to make it look good I guess. I two-stepped in front of this kid and backswung on him so hard that he went flying back a lil and then I tried my best to spin kick him. I think I caught part of his chin or something with my foot which was good enough for me. He got his ass out of the pit after that, that’s all I know.
But so my friend and I were talking about it and they said how I shouldn’t have done that because he’s just a kid and he’ll probably grow out of being an asshole like that and I said something like “well people only grow out of that stuff when they’ve learned their lesson.” Because clearly this kid has never gotten his ass kicked and sometimes that’s literally all you need to stop acting like a dickhead.
So do I suck for punching this kid in the face on purpose? Again I really don’t think so, but I guess I can see what my friend means about me being a grown adult just mobbing on this kid. Idk.
And just like last week, we find ourselves mulling over a situation I’m sure many of us have been in—or maybe wanted to be in—before. I for a fact have been crowd killed for no reason and I, for another fact, also went after that kid. I wasn’t an adult at the time, but god did it feel good to kick that shithead in his chest. What do we think, suckers? Does this dude suck?
