Gothic – Digitally remastered. Director Ken Russell applies his excess marking in this surreal experimental examination of creative dementia that shapes Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The story is embellished with events that were allegedly occurred in the Swiss city of Lord Byron (Gabriel Byrne) on the night of June 16, 1816. Byron's guests include the poet Percy Shelley (Julian Sands) and his future wife Mary (Natasha Richardson); Mary Claire's sister (Myriam Cyr) and Byron's personal doctor, Dr. John Polidori (Timothy Spall). Byron promises a night of horror as just a crazy poet can deliver: after participating in Laudano and other hallucinogens, guests tell ghost stories as they explore the dark corridors of their home. From here, Russell totally plunges into madness, discarding the structure of the plot in favor of fever and sleep in which guests face living manifestations of their own fears and insecurities: creative, mortal and sexual. Furious romantics also have a long speech about the nature of fear and the fine line between creative genius and madness.
