Well, this is random. Back on November 6, Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon made an appearance on SiriusXMâs Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk where he gave a little bit of an update on what him and his bandmates have been working on. The interview itself wasnât random, nor the fact that what he said Teslaâs working on is a covers project. Whatâs random is some of what theyâll be covering.
Hannon told Trunk about how they came to be, as transcribed by Blabbermouth.net:
âWell, you were talking about [Tesla frontman] Jeff Keith being a singer who can still sing compared to a lot of our other comrades from our era. And so weâre doing a collection of songs that showcase Jeff Keithâs singing ability. And itâs coming out really great, man. Some really obscure classic songs that you would not expect to hear from Tesla. And itâs centered around his ability to sing and his soulfulness in his voice. [Tesla bassist] Brian Wheat has been working really hard at producing it. These guys were just in the studio for a week. I did some recording in [Las] Vegas in my hotel room with Jeff, and weâre working on it. Itâs a work in progress.â
Love it. Bands do covers all the time and Tesla has done a couple of them during their recent sets, including their rendition of âGive a Little Bitâ by Supertramp and âI Love Youâ by Climax Blues Band. Itâs what else theyâve got sonically cooking covers-wise thatâll be interesting to the earâŠ
âThatâs one of the new ones weâre doing, and weâre doing another version of [Climax Blues Bandâs] âI Love Youâ, which got millions of views on Teslaâs Spotify, I think, or YouTube or something. So thatâs almost like one of our own hits, is the song âI Love Youâ. But thereâs some really obscure tracks on this new batch of recordings â songs by The Temptations⊠Jeff picked most of âem. And Brian, like I said, Brianâs been spearheading this project.â
Hannon didnât necessarily divulge when a full collection of these covers will be coming out, but weâll be waiting for it regardless.
